my goodness, i’ve reached exhaustion again… whew.
man, i didn’t sleep till 5:30 last night because both my roommates had a chem final the next day, and nick decided to pull an all-nighter… i guess that didn’t bother me too much but we did talk about black swan since he was the one who recommended me to watch it. i did enjoy talking it over with him, though i’m pretty sure half my brain was functioning with little sleep… haha.
woke up at 8am, and got ready to send esther to south station. i offered her a ride because i could not fathom how she could bring her freaking ENORMOUS suitcase with her all the way to south station… and i figured driving there would teach me how to get to china town and navigate around… and it did =) well sorta… i basically just learned more about mass pike :P anyways, steph, esther, and i left around 9am, got breakfast and dunkin donuts, and got to south station with enough time for esther to catch the 10am fungwah bus. then, we headed back to BC, and i took a nap until noon…
when i awoke, it was almost time to meet steph’s family! let’s see… i met her mom and dad, her oldest brother tim, and her best friend karyn. initially, i was definitely afraid. or more unsure as to what to do… so i just walked around, haha. steph was busy showing the family around the house, and that gave me time to recollect myself :P things got rolling as we helped steph move out of her place, and then we decided to go to cleveland circle for lunch. when we stepped outside, it was snowing! amazing… the first time it snows is always entrancing and magical… anyways, we decided to go to bangkok bistro, and i brought steph and her brother in my van. while steph was talking to her parents, tim and i (wow that sounds like i’m talking to myself…) talked about his role in being the protective brother… and i realized that i would be in his shoes if either of my sisters started dating… haha. thankfully, he seemed fine with the whole thing and im guessing you’re supposed to be mean as the older brother but i didn’t get that from him. whew. :P anyways, that whole thing started making me think about my sisters… haha. oh boy. well, when we got to bangkok, we realized that it was closed! so we headed to chipotle and got lunch. steph & i split a burrito because after eating a couple times, we had to admit we couldn’t finish one by ourselves… haha.
during lunch, i enjoyed listening to the conversations because i’m pretty sure this is what happened when steph came to dinner with my family… it gave me a feel of what goes on back at home and how each person relates to one another =) i always find that fascinating just because you’re never sure how things are until you actually talk and listen. like, i knew pastor lim mainly spoke in english, but it didn’t really occur to me until i was watching (wow now i sound like a stalker…) them :P and i guess that’s different from my family because i would not trust my dad’s english, haha. half of the time, my dad has corny jokes…ah and, i got to talk with steph’s mom in mandarin since she’s fluent in taiwanese, mandarin, and english, and i got to share about how my parents too. i guess my dad’s side is also from the same place in china as her family. interesting… well, after lunch, we parted ways, and sadly, i got a parking ticket! doh… though i’m pretty sure i was only late like 5-10 minutes, but i realized that if this was the worst thing that happened today so far, then i’m totally happy :)
after steph’s family left, i returned to my room to do some errands and took a nap. then, i did some packing and then offered to send my roommates and jv to coolidge corner since they were going to see black swan! the buses were not running too efficiently in the snow, and i thought it’d be better if i just sent them. it was a fun trip there, though there was definitely a lot of traffic! i’m glad i was able to spend time with them on the car one last time before next year, and then after a lot of waiting on the road, i made it to newton to pick up karen. since i didn’t finish packing, karen came back with me to my room to help clean up, pack, and make dinner. i really could not have done it without her help! while i packed, she helped wash dishes/make dinner, and we switched off in making dumplings and chicken nuggets, and we were able to eat and finish packing by 9… we loaded the minivan, and i headed over to 90 to say bye to the guys before heading back home. despite the snowfall, driving went safely, slowly, and smoothly. i think one time when i was driving my roommates to black swan, the van was acting up and not accelerating… with lights flashing and stuff… but i was able to pull over and restart the car. (i don’t think restart is the right word :P) but, thankfully, nothing bad happened! especially since i heard there were a couple accidents on comm ave that day. karen and i finally got back home around 10:30, and i felt SO relieved… i can’t wait to rest :) but at the same time, i gotta start working for my dad tomorrow! man, i guess at least i won’t be bored? i crave sleep…
today has definitely NOT been a productive study day… but entertaining nonetheless =)
began the morning by washing dishes….i like to introduce some order into my life before starting to study. then, steph came over for lunch, and we prepared and cooked the food, which was very healthy, as in lots of veggies. :P then, it was time to make care packages for the gajok, so jinah and i worked on them at her place, and then i decided to study in the 90 lounge. that was somewhat helpful, but i quickly got distracted because i’d much rather talk to people than study. :P and then it was time for dinner, so hanyin and i grabbed some food at lower. after a short period of food coma, i headed to higgins with dan, dropped off some care packages along the way, and “studied” at a special lab in higgins :)
at first, this seemed to be the ideal place to study! a secluded place where very few people knew where we were… then steph & jeannette came over for a study break to bring me their “friends,” phineas & ferb…whom i have eaten :P and justin came to study too! ok, i use study lightly as we just talked and sang, and watched youtube videos much more than study… but we had random spurts of productivity =) i’m very annoyed at my congestion… i hope i don’t get sick :/ and i’m still not worried about my exam tomorrow, though i haven’t been too diligent about studying… ugh. why can’t i focus?!
what an exhausting day… i pretty much was outside the entire time…woke up at 9 and headed to BC. showered, then with the help of jinah, woke up our entire gajok family :P i had to call john byun to wake up dan kim, haha. then, i picked up the freshmen both at upper and newton, while jinah got dan & the sophomore girls. we started at 10:30 and managed to get everyone ready and in the car by 11:00 and headed off to hmart!
when we got there, we first began with lunch, and while everyone got their own food, i’m not sure if anyone finished it! haha, we really should’ve shared, or in hindsight, we could’ve first got samples and THEN eaten :P darn… oh well, leftovers for finals studying! next, we went shopping, and my goodness, some of my “children” eat TONS of snacks… i guess they get that from me :P i buy wayyyy too many snacks, but i’m pretty sure rachel rivaled me. we were pretty efficient in shopping, so we headed off to the mall!
the mall was pretty fun, though we split off at the beginning since jinah had to find parking. since i took the freshmen, arthur & kevin came with me to the disney store while rachel & vi went to look for secret santa gifts. we eventually met up at brookstone, and tried to find rachel & vi… who told us that they were at victoria’s secret… great. dan & i took a few steps in with the rest of the group who were going in… and walked right out. haha, it just felt weird walking into there…. and kevin quickly came out as well. somehow, arthur made it through the entire store with the girls… :P we then saw rachel and vi come from a different location because i guess they were shopping at gap… haha. owned. maybe this was all just an excuse for us to go into victoria’s secret… but, i think they did go but left to go find other places to buy their gifts… next, we headed to the foodcourt to explore, but we were running out of time so we headed back to BC.
i dropped off the freshmen, but arthur & kevin helped me with my groceries, and while they were there, they decided to play some nba jam with me and my roommates :) it was pretty hilarious, and then i sent them back to upper since they were getting owned :P well, i had to get ready for tonight!
i got dressed and all for tonight’s dinner, and quickly made it to steph’s place. as we tried to catch the bus, we met hayeon and linda at the stop! then, when we got onto the bus which was FREAKING crowded, we realized that most people were heading to applebees for the psbc family dinner. however, when we got off at the reservoir stop, too many people recognized us *ahem* sam lee… and made a big deal that we were going on a date :P ah yes, did i forget to mention that? we were going to the north end for our one month :) so, as we left the bus in a rush to escape the “comments” made by our BC friends, we headed to the T stop and made our way to haymarket. we got out practically in front of the north end, and it was pretty easy to find our restaurant, the famiglia giorgio.
we were situated quickly, though we were a bit early for our reservation, and we were deciding on ordering two entrees. despite my friend’s comment on large portions at the restaurant, and the “warning” to light eaters, we thought we could handle it… but who were we kidding?! we definitely should not have ordered an appetizer as well! when we got our entrees, we were STUNNED with how much food there was, and even after eating several bites, it seemed as though we had made no progress… i’m pretty sure it was 2 or 3 times the regular portion given at other restaurants, and there was NO way either of us was going to finish it. i doubt we could’ve even split one… doh! at least they’re very generous :) anyways, i may have pictures of the food to show… but sadly, i will not be able to display a picture of us, as a certain someone did not allow me to take a picture of her… :P bummer. haha. and, the only regret i have is the fact that i did not realize students could get a 20% discount until AFTER i had my card swiped. i had read it online and in the menu, but it totally slipped my mind when i was looking at the receipt because i was actually worried that the place only took mastercard… that’s what was written on the little booklet thing given with the bill… thankfully, that wasn’t an actual issue!
finally, we took our leftovers and headed to mike’s pastry. we bought a chocolate chip cannoli and i ordered a chocolate mousse cannoli for my roommate =) we then sat and talked a bit outside before heading back. at steph’s place, we saw esther preparing dinner! and then we shared our cannoli as we watched disney channel. by now… and pretty much the entire ride back, i was pretty tired… so i realized i had to go back soon, and now, i know my body needs sleep. and despite not having done any work for the past 3 days… i’m really glad about the experiences i have made instead! psh who cares about studying, haha… even though, that was constantly in the back of my mind… i guess i’ll start tomorrow!
woke up at 5:30AM and felt READY to conquer the day! while i didn’t feel tired… i knew something was up because the room i slept in was uncomfortably warm, and i continually waking up almost on an hourly basis, thinking it was already 5:30… so that was not very fun. :(
got everything ready on time (with my suit and new overcoat!), and i met with a lady from pastor pan’s church, who worked at columbia dental, and she would guide me through the NY subways! whew… even though i mapped out my route, it was very helpful to have someone who knew the way there, although she seemed more stressed about getting me there than i was… haha. i kinda forgot where exactly i was supposed to go, so she was wondering about that, while i was trying to reassure her that there’d probably be a map, and i just remember it being on the 3rd floor… well when we got there, it was simple enough to find the dental building, and the security lady told me where to go! so, she was relieved, and i was very thankful for her help =)
the morning was very interesting, as i really liked the dean! he was really funny! and obviously prejudiced about how much he liked columbia :P but again, i really appreciated how he made known the “weaknesses” of columbia, in that it’s FREAKING intense first semester. as in, freshmen don’t have lives. they just study. until they have black circles… but it gets better after that! so… that’s definitely under a lot of consideration if i get in, but i know i’m going to have to study hard wherever i go to dental school, and if they are interviewing me, i would hope i’m qualified to do the work! so, the info session was entertaining, and he was just a great guy to talk to afterwards, as people would come in and out for interviews. i happened to be last for the interviews (shouldn’t read into that! :P), and i got to talk with the people around me. surprisingly, there were only 3 girls out of a group of 18 people… just 1 cali guy, and 6 of them were jewish! definitely an interesting mix… oh and the guy next to me comes from a uzbekistan background, while another girl is a mix of china and uzbekistan. COOL! i wouldn’t have guessed it since they’re both from NY… oh, and most of interviewees there were from NY… but columbia says only like 1/4 of their 80 person class is from NY… hmm. and, that guy next to me has an older sister who’s a 4th year at columbia. so we saw her a lot as she would peek her head in to see how her little brother was doing :P later, we saw her working on a patient!
anyways, it’s been a month since my last interview at NYU, and it look me a little while to get familiar to everything… i was surprised that i didn’t recognize many of the people there… actually just one person who went to the NYU interview with me. but, i definitely used this time to understand better what i wanted from dental school, as columbia offered a slightly different focus compared to the other schools i was looking at. columbia was much more about learning all the biomedical sciences (taken with medical students!) in hopes that this will prepare me for larger things after graduation… and during the interview, she reminded me of the same thing… to find what i wanted out of dental school and determine whether columbia would be a good fit. my interviewer was so nice! i really enjoyed our conversation together, and i’m surprised i got her to laugh :) i was trying to explain how i was involved in ksa and in gajoks, and how i had two “wives” but a girlfriend as well… at first i was like, i have a wife. i mean 2. oh, but i also have a girlfriend… owned. ok, it didn’t go as bad as that, but i was able to clarify what i was trying to explain, and how this all related to being intentional about relationships. i probably could’ve elaborated, but i think she wanted me to explain a little of everything i wrote down on my application, so i had a lot of fun doing that! i really liked how down to earth my interviewer was, and she even shared how her son decided to go to penn over columbia because he wanted to do something himself… and not go to columbia just because his mom worked there, and this was all to demonstrate how i should make sure a school is a right fit for me! and, i really took that to heart, and i hope i have the option of considering columbia… we’ll see =)
next, we had a short financial aid discussion, and then buffet for lunch with second year students! not gonna lie, this was probably the best meal prepared by any dental school with salmon and steak flank, but i’m pretty sure, it’s because other groups were interviewing there as well… namely, there were MD/PHD students who were being interviewed, so there were a lot of people eating lunch! anyways, i got to listen to the experiences of one of the second year students, and i got the impression that he really enjoyed his life at columbia, despite the known pressures of freshmen year. i mean, he just survived it! so, that’s heartening to know :P
we finally had a tour of the place, and it was a great facility, although we didn’t get to talk to the freshmen because when we walked in, they were taking a practical exam! it did not smell too good either…i guess for me, i don’t care too much about the facilities as long as i love the philosophy of the school and the faculty there because i know that the professors i have, the classes i take, and the people i meet will have a more meaningful impact on my dental school life, than how technologically advanced things are, or how nice the walls are… then again, there were some PRETTY nifty stuff there… like a sports bar study lounge =) and, LASERS. OMG, the two new york schools use LASERS to treat children. WHY. CANT. OTHER. PLACES. DO. THAT. too awesome. especially when the dean showed a video of it… how unreal! ok ok, maybe i do geek out about technology :P but i see that as well as how nice a campus looks as an added bonus, rather than a necessity. though, i guess that may not have been how i chose BC… haha.
after the tour, we had a short “debriefing,” telling us how the earliest we could know our decisions is in january after the first round of acceptance letters have come in… and they also said we were a very nice group :P well, i then rushed out of the place to make my way to chinatown… and it was a very long ride! when i got to my stop after switching two lines, i walked in one direction for like 10 minutes before realizing i was going the wrong way… doh! and then i made it back double time to the fung wah stop. so i got on the 3:30 bus back to boston…
this was a stressful ride back because i was hoping to get to south station by 7:30… at least, that’s what the lady at the front desk told me. sadly, i soon realized that even those chinese bus drivers needed to obey the laws of traffic… and i was pretty sure i was not going to make it when we stopped at mcdonalds at 6:30. i think we had only gone halfway because we had not even passed through connecticut because of traffic, and we didn’t make it to south station till 9:15… wow an unbelievable 5 hours and 45 minute bus ride… probably tying the bolt bus ride last time :/
ah, a memorable moment was using the bathroom on the bus. i would not recommend doing so… but i realized that after all my hustling to find the fung wah bus (especially during that double time power walk back!), i had to pee lots. except the bus was constantly moving and stopping in traffic. so it was hard to pee standing up… i’m not sure if i know how to “spare the details” but at one point in time, i was flung back where my back hit the wall because i didn’t have the proper balance. that was very scary because…i’m not used to such circumstances, especially in bathroom situations. but, i managed to stop/hold it in, return to my original stance, and continue. and repeat. a very tricky situation that i maneuvered out of…i would only recommend this experience to those who would like a challenge in life when peeing. standing up.
now, i was in a hurry back to south station because i hoped to see the highrock christmas concert! it started at 8, and i thought that at least, i could make it by the intermission at 9 if i were to be late… but, as the bus ride progressed longer and longer, i realized that wasn’t going to be the case. i hoped that by committing to going, with a ticket bought and everything, i could almost will myself to go, and i was SO excited since this would be my first time actually being able to go and with lots of highrock people! well… that was disappointing, to say the least. and throughout the ride, i was wondering why my hindsight was so good, but my foresight not so much… (is it foresight?… i just know that’s a pokemon move…sigh :P) at first, i thought, i should’ve left the columbia tour early to make sure i could get to the buses an hour earlier, but even then, i would’ve barely made the intermission… and at the same time, it felt impolite to not go on the tour, since this was a possibility for dental school! so, i convinced myself that it wouldn’t have made much of a difference. on the other hand, i realized that i would’ve been late (though not this late!) for the concert, and i could’ve gone on saturday…but i didn’t know who else would go (aside from steph), and everyone else was going on friday! so i just really hoped it would’ve worked out… but the bus ride made me realize that i do overcommit my time, and perhaps i do so to please “everyone”… i definitely did not estimate the bus ride taking that long, but it was kinda silly to hinge my plans on something i couldn’t control… ugh. i need to plan better ahead of time, and well, when i looked at the big picture, it’s just a concert that will hopefully happen next year. obviously, it would’ve been a great time, had i been able to go, but my adventure on the way back was not over…
so, when i finally arrived back to south station, i hopped on the red line to alewife, where my dad would pick me up. that worked out pretty well until the harvard stop. and then, the T said it just stopped working… so we had to leave and take shuttle buses. great. i could sense there was a problem because the T would just hang at stops for like 5 minutes before moving on… probably due to something going on further down the track. anyways, i was able to get on a bus right when it stopped, but as soon as we hit the next stop, there were TONS of people! in fact, one woman ran in front of the bus to stop it, and people got on, despite it not being an actual bus stop. WHAT THE FREAK. that was kinda scary… and the bus driver got a “scolding” for doing that though it wasn’t even his fault! there were tons of people in line waiting for buses, and in the cold, the situation just seemed miserable :/ thankfully, i was already on the bus, and it was 10PM already… so the concert was over anyways. well, i didn’t make it to alewife, which was just 3 stops away from harvard, until 10:30… because of the traffic, and actually one of the passengers had to direct the driver to alewife from davis square. haha, interesting…
when i got there, my parents picked me up, and then we headed to… highrock! why? because even though i couldn’t make it to the concert itself, i realized alewife was close enough to the church that my parents could give rides to a couple BC students who were there, especially since it’d take an hour and half of bus rides to get back to campus while it’d take just 30 minutes by car! when i got there, i met with steph, jen li, hayeon, susan, charles, and justin feng, and we all squeezed in! it was a very interesting car ride, as everyone was teaching each other korean and chinese… my parents were confused as to who was chinese and korean :P after sending everyone back, i finally got home and ate dinner! i kinda forgot because i ate some cookies given to me by mrs. pan in the morning, and that helped ease the hunger. =)
whew, i am EXHAUSTED. but thankful for today. sure, some things didn’t work out according to plan, but i still enjoyed the day and didn’t let that disappointment ruin it =) i think instead, i had some interesting memories of my own, and of course, i had my columbia interview! a great day, and tomorrow is packed too!
bummer… slept through my 9am because i slept so late, and found out from eugene that i missed out on a good lecture! well, i might not have gotten as much as i would’ve liked to anyways because of my lack of sleep :/ but, with extra rest, classes were fine, though psych was still a struggle to stay awake despite trying to study for another class :P
after class, i had lunch with young jae & eugene kim, and it’s great to catch up with them. man, why does it feel like just in a couple weeks, so much has changed! if i’m not in constant conversation, then it seems like an eternity has passed… haha. well, after lunch, i managed to finish my math homework and take a nap =)
then i got ready for tonight, as steph & i were going to the christmas lighting in boston commons! it was a good thing we dressed warmly because it was SO COLD! actually, i wanted to wear my sister’s ugly sweater… but she forgot to bring it to class to give it to me. i think that was actually a good thing for me :P there was a huge crowd at boston commons, and that actually shielded us from the cutting winds, but we were a bit short to see over the crowds :/ at least we could still listen to the songs and occasionally see who was performing… i guess it wasn’t that interesting :P but i got to see who the rocketeers were! actually, the best part was the actual tree lighting at the end, but we had to wait so long for it… i guess that makes sense :/ we also saw maggie & chris there, which was a surprise, but it was so easily recognizable since they’re both giants :P they must’ve had an awesome viewing experience but i bet the people behind them didn’t hahaha. well, once the christmas tree was lit, steph was very surprised that there were fireworks! i guess she really likes fireworks. i think i was surprised that they would have it IN the city…it’d be pretty funny if boston commons actually lit up :P well, aside from the chaos and panic from the fires and the potential stampede from the place, that’d be funny. (or so i thought…)
well, after the tree lighting ceremony, we made our way through the enormous crowds, realized HOW bitter cold it was with the wind, and tried to find a place to eat… but we found that there were long lines everywhere, so we headed to the movies! we were planning to watch tangled, and we caught the 8:25 showing as planned :) it was pretty good! i thought disney did a fantastic job with this story, and it was hilarious too! i’d definitely watch it again, though for some reason, it left me wanting more? i mean, a great story was told in a cute way, but i wish it went deeper! i really shouldn’t be comparing this to toy story 3 :P so anyways, it’s a movie worth watching…though i don’t think rapunzel will be added as another disney princess :/
finally, steph and i went to the most exquisite dinner ever: MICKEY Ds! hahahaha. we totally skipped out on dinner prior to the whole thing because we kinda had a set schedule, and skittles tied us over through the movie… i really don’t know my way around boston commons, so we just went to mcdonalds to eat =) man, the person taking our order seemed a bit down/stressed, so i hope my short conversation with him cheered him up?
finally, we returned back to BC and eventually got to steph’s place at midnight… whew, what a long night!
gosh, i HAVE to make it to class tomorrow… ok, time to run on 3 hours of sleep!
sleep has been feeling so great this break =) i woke up at 11, and got ready to meet my high school friends for dim sum! we decided to go to formosa in nashua, and i brought harrison & brian, and met up with daimeng & chris there. it was a pretty good lunch, and we felt pretty full at the end! it was definitely interesting to introduce all this stuff to chris, since he was the only white guy there :P man, it’s so crazy to talk about our plans AFTER college. ridiculous… especially since i didn’t get to see most of them during the summer, like we usually do. and now, it’s crunch time…as i will hear back from dental school, and harrison is applying for a PhD program. brian is still deciding between working/law school, but leaning towards working since he hasn’t taken his LSAT yet. and well, chris & daimeng are not sure. haha. those silly U of I kids doing comp sci :P well, we did catch up, though we realized that we had to meet up again during the winter because this was too quick of a meeting! oh, and a slight fail… i knew the owner of the restaurant since she goes to my church, but since she didn’t recognize me when we were ordering… i didn’t want to trouble her…. but later, i found out when my parents went to go eat after we left, she was wondering why i didn’t introduce myself. oooooops. haha. i really gotta listen to my roommate’s advice, because he tells me that at BC it’s better to say hi and get unnoticed/ignored than it is to ignore people and accept its consequences… man, that requires me stepping out of my comfort zone! :( ok ok, time to be more courageous.
anyways, we headed back to chill at my house, and it was hilarious playing videogames together. it mainly consisted of owning daimeng, as brian, harrison, and i would try to kill daimeng’s character in super mario bros, as he’s not very much of a team player… but in the end, we would screw ourselves over. it was very amusing. we laugh WAY too much, and got tired pretty quick :P that and food coma was kicking in… but a fun time! ah yes, and i learned that harrison is going to go farm in france in january… how random! i see that MIT education has reaaaaaaalllly paid off. haha. we’ll see how that goes :P
i decided to take a nap afterwards, and then i proceeded to do some work. i was productive for 3 hours or so, and i’ve been able to watch the nigahiga/wong fu productions movie: ASS - agents of secret stuff. kinda corny jokes…. the girl reminds me of a full blooded asian kristen kruek :P and i can’t decide who’s cuter: ryan or arden… hahahahaha. maybe it’s phil! but, in terms of quality, i was impressed! especially with limited resources. obviously, asking for incredible acting is too much, but they did pretty well with what they had, so i don’t want to bash on them! oh gosh, AND it was 35 minutes long… that’s a huge feat! i’ve come to realize that even the short films made by WFP take a lot of time to create/edit, so that’s a lot of dedication and time put into that film!
well, now i’m sleeping in the living room because we have a guest speaker over in my room… errr. but i don’t really mind. that makes the distance between the computer room & my makeshift bed/sofa that much closer! but, i’m still up now because i need to fix my sister’s computer. she has another virus/trojan. amazing. and i can either do work or play… doh. or sleep. but the nap has negated my tiredness. oops.
after a good night’s sleep, i decided that if i were to be more productive with my time… i would have to limit my tumblring. and as a result, i had to regretfully unfollow some of the more frequent and interesting posters because i would freaking check it too often! :/ i can’t believe it took me just 10 minutes to go through everything that was posted today. my goodness, i’ve spent TONS of time on tumblr :P
anyways, my family went to china town, and jae lee met up with us to go eat as well! so, it was my family, the pans, and jae =). we ate a HUGE lunch with salty spicy squid, lobster, bbq pork, etc…and it was most satisfying to hear that jae agreed east ocean city was much better than victoria’s :P even the salty spicy squid! and it was very fun taking care of the little kids: josephine & zachary. they don’t eat much though, haha. well, after we bought some bakeries and dropped jae off back at BC.
i played videogames for the rest of the night… and i finished professor layton & the curious village. that’s probably the highlight of the night, haha. how sad :P
then, i played sims 3. for a long time… wow. i think we were all too full from lunch to eat dinner at a normal time. but i got into a snacking mood while watching glee, then i finally ate chicken nuggets for dinner :P at 11PM. hilarious. what a weird thanksgiving dinner… but i didn’t really mind. sadly though, i don’t think i’ll be getting any work done tonight either! ugh. but, i AM going to buy my christmas albums that i’ve been waiting SO long for! YESSSSS. but no black friday shopping for me… not that interested in getting trampled :P
managed to wake up this morning for my 9AM. then had breakfast with steph & jeannette at the rat. for some reason, i seem to worry more about steph’s essay than she was because it was due later in the day…and she was halfway done. haha. but she eventually finished it! anyways, when she left to go work on that essay with jeannette, i stayed and chilled on tumblr :P then i headed back to my room for lunch! since it was monday, it was time for ryan and me to eat chicken nuggets! we have this ritual of doing so every monday for lunch, but recently, we either ran out of nuggets or i wasn’t there because of interviews… so i restarted that tradition today! and even better, they were dinosaur chicken nuggets! YUUUUM. TREX & stegosauruses. (for some reason… i keep wanting to say stegosauri :P)
since ryan & i were in a rush to class, we brought the nuggets with us as we walked to class, and we also met pegah & sean along the way! so i gave pegah one and went to physio, where i had just enough to give one to debbie, tiffany, dan & heeyoung :P that made physio entertaining :) classes went fine today, and right after i took a 2 hour nap!
after the nap, i got ready for my gajok thanksgiving dinner & the shaw seminar later tonight. however, i got a bit distracted by halo, but i was also able to see my roommates ryan & marco leave for cali! i guess both nick & i staying until wednesday, although i’m doing so to make sure everything’s cleaned up :P running a bit late, i eventually made it to mac because they served turkey dinners! we held it there because we were hoping the freshmen on upper came… but two of them couldn’t! and so we made all the sophomores basically walk all the way up to mac :P even the freshman from newton (vi) was there! haha. it was a good dinner, and i really enjoyed our time there. i think we shared some good thoughts about thanksgiving, making sure to be appreciative of things we take for granted (like our parents and what they do for us!) we then ended with a photo =)
headed to the library to prep for shaw and i borrowed 2 dvds from the media center: cars & enchanted. steph wanted to watch a movie together, and she convinced me not to study tonight because i had nothing due :P
next, i made my way up to shaw, and the shaw seminar tonight was great! we had a guest speaker, mr. gunduz, and he spoke on positive leadership. i was SO impressed, though initially skeptical, of how enthusiastic he was! he brought SO much energy to the seminar, and he won me over as well as the freshmen :P i was very encouraged by his talk/philosophy on life, and i could definitely see how he embodied what he taught and that he served as a model example for others to follow because his actions attest to his personality!
finally, as i headed back to my room, i picked up my ksa t-shirt from soojin, then i met up with steph to watch cars at my place! it was a fun night, especially since i didn’t really think about/work on anything school related tonight, which i can’t say i’ve done in some time! gosh, i need to tweak my sleeping schedule…things are crazy!
day 322 - first date!
ah, but let me start from the beginning :P despite only getting 4 hours of sleep, and knocking out at 6AM for the second time this week, i was surprisingly efficient with my studying, and got up at 10AM to study again until class at 11. then i took my test at 12. thankfully, it went VERY smoothly! i felt like i knew most of the answers because the questions were straightforward, very much unlike my physio exam…
after the exam, i was so relieved! because that was my last test before break :) and no assignments either, yes! i don’t think i’ve felt such relaxation from realizing that i had nothing immediately due on friday or even next week! anyways, i got lunch with arthur, my other freshman gajok son, and we had a great time talking… a lot of it focused on god, church, jaeson ma, and adjusting to bc. and, it’s encouraging to hear that while it was kinda difficult at first to become familiar with BC, he’s really enjoyed it so far!
then, i headed back to my room to see what i had to get done, stopped by mcguinn to visit binh so i could buy an ALCVC pasta dinner ticket and support him! then i took a nap, and got ready for the date =)
before heading over to steph’s place, i asked many people for advice about flowers… and i distinctly remember to not get red roses. and to get something subtle, cute, and something along those lines. so i asked the florist at cleveland circle, and it turned out pretty well! presentation is key :) and when i got to her place around 6, steph was pleasantly surprised too!
there was a slight change in plans for the night because we had originally planned to eat and then get a movie, but i think because of harry potter tonight, the most suitable time for watching megamind had to be at 6:55 at the fenway theater! and so, we headed over and made it just in time to see the previews and everything. and, the movie was a LOT funnier than expected. i cannot believe how much we laughed…and there were some romantic and deep parts :P man, i think i’m going to have to buy this when it comes out because it’s definitely an underdog story and i love the twist about superhero vs. super villain.
after the movie, we headed to boylston and made our way to hotpot! the restaurant is called Kaze, and we ordered a beef entrée and seafood entrée to split, and we managed to finish most of it! it was very fun cooking the stuff and everything, and at the end, we felt so full…. haha. and i managed to get one picture taken… because steph doesn’t like pictures to be taken :P so, consider this as a glimpse of the evening.
then, as we headed back to the T, we stopped by tufts dental school because it was just a street away! and near the T station, we noticed the incredibly LONG line for harry potter… it stretched for blocks! it’s SUCH a good thing we switched the schedule to see megamind before eating, and we weren’t really that hungry during the movie. i was a bit worried that the restaurant may have closed after the movie, but i found out that it doesn’t close till 1AM! and so when we got there at 9, there was still a good amount of people there, and people consistently came and left…ah yes, there was also a cute baby watching us eat… um, sometimes, he was put in the corner because he would just pick up utensils and drop them on the floor, haha. but he was amusing to watch because he kept staring at us… :P
anyways, we decided to walk around boston commons before heading on the T at boylston, and it was a refreshing walk, especially since we felt so full! we looked around at monuments/bandstand, and visited the frog pond that did not have ice yet :/ and then ended by looking at the stars =)
we finally headed back, and got to campus near midnight! wow, time went by so quick… and we were tired. so, we decided to watch disney channel and drink tea. actually, let me clarify, steph wanted to watch disney channel… haha. but again, i guess i lose track of time. disney shows are only 30 minutes long…. and the plots are so quick. i follow part of an episode, then come back to it and realize it’s already another episode. wow.
so, i’d say it was a pretty good first day =) very memorable and fun, and surprisingly long! looking back, i think… we spent like 9 hours together lol. i’m pretty sure that’s not normal… but at the same time, i’ve come to realize that relationships take time. or they require time to grow. and, that’s something i have to allot for because it’s not like a meeting where you just say, 1 hour from this time to that. and, i have to be flexible in changing my schedule… which has possibly affected my sleeping habits :P it looks like it’s another 5-6AM sleep time tonight…. wooooo. i’m SO going to use this thanksgiving break to catch up on sleep & work. i hope i don’t get distracted by videogames :P
woke up feeling exhausted! i can’t believe i’ve skipped two 9AMs in a row, and i’m probably gonna do that tomorrow in preparation for my midterm tomorrow (or rather later today…). it’s ironic though, i was working on math homework to prepare myself for class, but i overslept it :P
i managed to look through some material for physio and then headed off to meet dan kim (‘11) for lunch! he’s the gajok uncle =) i think that’s probably the first time i’ve done so…and i really enjoyed the conversation. i really resonated with his outlook on life, because i think instead of focusing so much on just the grades & performance, he understands that there’s so many more important things to life. gosh, i wish i had gotten lunch with him earlier at BC!
took the physio exam, and it felt ugly. as in, unexpected because it differed significantly from the first exam, and it threw me off a bit. i did not leave that exam feeling satisfied with how i did because i doubted a lot of the responses i put down. and so, i zoned out in dev and basically just talked to eugene on facebook… except he sat right next to me. lol. i made shark & robot faces. and showed him my pokemon powerpoint. haha….i don’t know why i even went to class :P
after class, i got to meet up with kevin, who’s a freshmen in my gajok. and it was great getting to know his interests and such, finding out that he’s more interested in journalism/comm, and beat production (possible music minor?)! and so far, he enjoys BC, which is very encouraging. =) oh and he can EAT. and yet, he still has LOTS of money on his meal plan…. i don’t get it! :P ah yes, one last comment, i’ve noticed that the two kevin/kavin kangs that i know play starcraft 2…. must be SOME correlation :)
coming back from 2nd lunch, i immediately took a nap. put on some music, which i regret because i realized that while it was peaceful, i probably sleep better with no music on… unless it’s just rainymood :P anyways, i slept a good two hours and nick also joined me haha. i mean, in his own bed… but it’s interesting. we seem to have similar, yet strange sleeping schedules. i decided to get up earlier and do some work, but even by 5, it was so dark outside! then, it was time to get dinner with binh. it was great talking with him about kairos, for both of us to share our experiences, and for us to talk a little about what we understood God to be. it was a good time, but then i had to go do work!
that sort of worked, except then i got distracted. and then stopped by shinyoung’s for brooke fraser tickets!! wow, i didn’t expect to have an opportunity to buy them because they sold out so quick, but YES! brooke is AMAZING. and awkward =) and it’s this saturday! then my phone died, so i headed back to the library, to pack up my stuff, and charge my phone.
then, it was time for a little gajok surprise ;) jinah & i invited just the freshmen (rachel, arthur, vi & kevin) to lower for “late night,” and i must admit, jinah & i did a pretty good job in keeping them clueless. they’d realize something was up, but then we’d divert them with jolly ranchers. :) and so, when they realized that they weren’t supposed to be eating late night… we told them that we were going to newton! and jinah had a car, so we piled in. to their surprise, minje was in the trunk! AHAHAHA. they got SO freaked out :P because minje was like, “i’ve been kidnapped! where are they taking me?” and then the freshmen realized… they weren’t going to newton :P. instead, we headed to IHOP! everyone was hungry enough to finish their own late night meal, and it was delicious! and food coma inducing. :P we had some interesting conversation about who we thought was cute in each grade… but to make it more meaningful, we talked about our roses, buds, and thorns (haha the influence of saeyoung & susie :P). it was a great night out, somewhat spontaneous & planned at the same time, and i think everyone enjoyed it =) we also named minje our honorary uncle… because he helped plan it. i think he was originally supposed to surprise the freshmen and blindfold them… but we didn’t want to be that cruel :P
and so, getting back to campus, i got distracted by my roommates before finally, STUDYING for my psych midterm! prior to that, i was doing math homework… so i didn’t start till 2AM. and now it’s 5, and i’m somewhat ready for the test. it should be pretty straightforward, but i can’t believe i’m developing these kinds of habits of studying. too much stuff is happening!! i really can’t wait for break to reset, i hope…
